Question 29

Nalorphene (C19H21NO3), similar to morphine, is used to combat withdrawal symptoms in narcotic users. Dose of nalorphene generally given is 1.5 mg. Calculate the mass of 1.5 x 10-3m aqueous solution required for the above dose.

Answer

Molecular mass of nalorphene (C19H21NO3),

= 19 x 12 + 21 x 1 + 1 x 14 + 3 x 16 =  311 g/mol

Moles of nalorphene (C19H21NO3) = 1.5 x 10-3 x 311 = 4.67 x 10-6 mol

Now molality = (moles of solute  / mass of solvent in g) x 1000

Putting the values in above equation,we get

1.5 x 10-3 = (4.67 x 10-6 / mass of water) x 1000

Or

Mass of water = (4.67 x 10-6 x 1000) / 1.5 x 10-3

Therefore mass of water = 3.1g
