What is a scholarship?

The scholarship is a kind of reward provided to students for their academic achievement to support them to do better. The Scholarship is a financial aid given by the government, university, or any other organization to students to continue their education. This money can be used to pay for different expenses like books, tuition fees, project work, or any other expenses caught on studies. Students need not refund this money as in the case of an education loan.

Post-Metric Scholarship: Post Matric Scholarship plot is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme and actualized through State Government and UT organization. The Scheme gives money related help to meritorious students belonging to economically weaker sections, the scheduled caste, and minority communities so as to provide them better opportunities for higher education, increase their rate of attainment in higher education and enhance their employability.

Major Scholarship of 2020-21 for College, University Students

Merit Cum Means Scholarship for Technical and Professional Courses CS (Minorities)

This merit-cum-means based scholarship is given by the Ministry of Minority Affairs for minority community students for continuing technical or professional programs at the undergraduate or postgraduate level. The students who have obtained at least 50% marks or equivalent in the earlier final examination. And get an annual family income of not more than INR 2.50 Lakh can apply for this scholarship.

Award details: Course fee and maintenance allowance

Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for University and College Students

The Directorate of Higher Education following the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) gives this scholarship to financially aid class 12 passed meritorious scholars in proceeding university/college education. The students who are above the 80th percentile of successful applicants in the appropriate stream in class 12 can apply for this scholarship. They are needed to pursue a regular medical and engineering course at a recognized institution. And, their annual family income should not be more than INR 8 Lakh from all sources.

Award details: INR 10,000 to INR 20,000 per annum

Application process: Online by the National Scholarship Portal

Application timeline: Between July and November (Tentative)

Graduate Scholarship for Professional Courses for ST/SC

Run by the University Grants Commission (UGC), this scholarship scheme intends to help students belonging to ST/SC category to pursue professional courses at the postgraduate level.

The scholars in the first year of a professional course through the current academic year can apply for this scholarship. They must be studying at a recognized university/institution/college.

Courses approved by the MCA, RCI, DCI, PCI, NCTIS, NCTE, Bar Council of India, AICTE, INC, ICAR, and Forensic Regulatory & Development Authority are granted as professional courses.

Award details: Online through National Scholarship Portal

Application process: Up to 7,800 per month

Application timeline: Between December and January (Tentative)

Scholarship Timeline

The application timeline for any scholarship differs from scholarship to scholarship. Thus, the students need to keep track of the scholarships they want to apply for. Students should refer to the official website for relevant details.

Scholarship Guidelines

At times, some scholarship providers give complete application guidelines for students to help out the process of application for them. Carefully going through these guidelines before applying will tremendously decrease the possibilities of errors occurring in your application.

Prepare all your Documents

Most scholarships require supporting documents in a guided format as proof for all academic and personal information declared in your application and the important information that is necessarily needed to apply for the scholarship. These may involve, but aren’t limited to, the following:

  • Mark sheets and certificates of educational qualification
  • Identity proof
  • Family income certificate
  • Caste certificate
  • Admission letter
  • Essay submission
  • Letter of recommendations
  • Applicant’s photograph

Note: Having a scanned copy of all the necessary documents as per the specified size guidelines are advisable to avoid rejections in the case of online applications. For offline applications, you need to have photocopies of the needed documents.

Educational Qualification

Depending on scholarship to scholarship, the educational requirements may vary. In this section, the scholars need to give their current as well as previous academic details (as required). You may require to keep the mark sheets and academic transcripts intact before applying for the scholarship. You must fill in the correct information. The details that you need to give include the marks, year of passing, board/university of passing your class 10, 12, graduation, or post-graduation (As specified in the scholarship).

Family income details

This part is not necessarily asked in all the scholarships. But, the scholarships which are being paid based on the financial need of the students may need you to enter the details of family income. This section needs you to give the total annual income of your family (including the income of both the parents (if possible) or guardian. Also, you need to provide your family income with an income certificate issued by a responsible authority.

How to fill the scholarship forms?

National Scholarship Portal (NSP) is a portal for all government scholarships. Introduced by the government of India, the portal lists a number of scholarships that are being given by the different departments of the government including the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Ministry of Minority Affairs, Ministry of Labour and Employment, etc. The portal also lists the scholarships that are being given by different states’ governments. How to apply for these scholarships online? Find your answer below.

Step 1: National Scholarship Portal Registration

  1. All fresh users need to visit the Home Page of the National Scholarship Portal to register.
  2. Click on ‘New Registration’.
  3. A page of ‘Guidelines for Registration on NSP’ will open.
  4. Go through the guidelines carefully.
  5. Click on ‘Continue’ to proceed.
  6. Fill in all the required details.
  7. Click on ‘Register’.
  8. You will receive a student application ID and password on your registered mobile number.

Step 2: Log in with National Scholarship Portal

  1. Click on the login button to start the scholarship application.
  2. Enter the application ID and password received on your registered number.

Step 3: Change the password (it is a mandatory step)

  1. a) Upon successful login, you will receive an OTP on your registered mobile number.
  2. b) Verify the OTP.
  3. c) You will be directed to change the password page.
  4. d) Change the password and continue.

Step 4: Enter the Dashboard and Complete the Application

  1. Once the password is changed, you will be directed to the Applicant’s Dashboard Page.
  2. Click on ‘Application Form’ to begin the application.
  3. Enter in all registration details, academic details, and basic details.
  4. Click on ‘Save & Continue’.
  5. Add scheme details, contact details, and upload the necessary documents.
  6. Click on ‘Save as Draft’ (To confirm if you have entered the correct information)
  7. Once verified, click on the ‘Final Submit’ button.

Note: The applications finally submitted cannot be edited again. So, the applicants are advised to be double sure while clicking on final submit as no change of information will be entertained after final submission.
