Mother Teresa was a great lady and known as “One Woman, One Mission” she had taken a big step to change the world. Mother Teresa (1910–1997) was a Roman Catholic nun who dedicated her life to helping the poor and poor around the world. Mother Teresa was a humanitarian. This means she did things to help out other people. Her entire life was fully devoted to helping the poor, the sick, the needy, and the helpless. Mother Teresa has bestowed with the Nobel Peace Prize, in 1979. And became a symbol of charitable, selfless work.

Where did Mother Teresa grow up?

This luminous messenger of God’s love (Mother Teresa) was born in Uskub, Ottoman Empire on August 26, 1910. Uskub is now called Skopje and is the capital of the Republic of Macedonia. She was the youngest of the children born to Nikola and Drana Bojaxhiu. Her father was involved in Albanian-community politics in Ottoman Macedonia, died when she was eight and she was raised by her mother. Her birth name was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu later it became famous as Mother Teresa after her great works and life achievements. Agnes grew up in the Roman Catholic Church and decided to devote her life to God at an early age. When she turned 18, Agnes joined the Sisters of Loreto to become a missionary to India. Before going to India, she had to learn English. She spent one year in Ireland learning to speak English at the Loreto Abby. A year later, She began her missionary work in Darjeeling, India. She learned the local language, Bengali, and taught at the local school. In 1931, she took her pledges as a nun and chose the name, Teresa. Teresa taught for several years becoming the headmistress at a school in eastern Calcutta in India.

Nunhood & Education

When she was twelve years old, she felt strongly the call of God. She wants to be a missionary to spread the love of Christ. Mother Teresa left her parental house at the age of eighteen. She followed the Sisters of Loreto, an Irish community of nuns with missions in India. After a few months of training in Dublin she was sent to India, where on May 24, 1931, she took her initial pledges as a nun. Mother Teresa taught at St. Mary’s High School in Calcutta from 1931 to 1948. In 1948, the suffering and poverty she glimpsed outside the convent walls made such a deep impression on her that she got permission from her superiors to leave the convent school and dedicate herself to working among the poorest of the poor in the slums of Calcutta. Mother Teresa had no funds, she relies on Divine Providence and began an open-air school for slum children. Shortly she was joined by voluntary helpers, and economic support was also forthcoming. This made it possible for her to increase the scope of her work.

One Woman, One Mission

Mother Teresa was the founder of the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic congregation of women dedicated to serving the poor. Mother Teresa was recognized as one of the 20th Century’s most prominent humanitarians. She was canonized as Saint Teresa of Calcutta in 2016. The primary objective of this mission was to look after people, whom nobody else was prepared to look after. Mother Teresa felt that serving others was a fundamental principle of the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Missionaries of Charity

Mother Teresa established a group within the Catholic Church called the Missionaries of Charity, in 1950. Mother Teresa explained the purpose of the Missionaries of Charity as an organization that would take care of the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the untouchables, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people that have become a burden to the society and are ignored by everyone. Mother Teresa had some lofty goals. She herself was craving only a few years of the beginning, she accomplished some amazing things. Initially, when she started the Missionaries of Charity there were only 13 members. Now, the group has over 4,000 members who care for people all over the world.

Sylvester Stallone: The True Stallion Sylvester Stallone who breathed life into the characters of Rocky Balboa and John Rambo and made them immortal is idolized and revered by movie lovers worldwide. He was the ultimate personification of an action hero and he carried off his characters with such aplomb and conviction that he left his fans mesmerized. Here are a few highlights of this great actor’s life and career:

Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone was born to Frank and Jackie Stallone. Frank Stallone was an Italian who had later migrated to the US in the 1930s.

Interestingly, as his mother Jackie gave birth to Stallone, she went through several complications. The doctors had to use two pairs of forceps during the delivery and the misuse led to the snapping of a vital nerve on Stallone’s face. This led to Stallone being paralysed on the lower left side of his face. This is the reason for Stallone’s snarling look and slurry speech.

His family then moved to Washington DC where his father opened a beauty parlour and his mother opened a gymnasium. His parents divorced when Sylvester was nine and he continued living with his mother after the divorce.

At a point of time when Sylvester was completely broke, he appeared in a soft pornographic film called the’ The Party at Kitty and Stud’s.’ He also appeared in an erotic movie called Score. Sylvester later explained the reason for appearing in such films saying that ‘he was at the rope’s end’ and had no way out.

In the period between 1970 and 1975, Stallone appeared in a number of movies in minor roles. Although some did an average business, Stallone hadn’t won recognition and fame. In 1975, he happened to witness the fight between Muhammad Ali and Chuck Wepner. The fight moved him and inspired him to write the story of Rambo. He had some difficulty in winning the lead role for the project, he convinced his producers to cast him in the role somehow. The movie went on to become one of the greatest hits of the time propelling Stallone to the heights of stardom. The movie won a number of awards and Stallone became a star overnight.

He went to make movies such as Paradise Alley and starred in the social drama F.I.S.T. In the year 1979, he wrote, acted and directed the sequel to Rocky, Rocky II, which became a huge success.

In 1982, Stallone appeared as John Rambo in the movie First Blood. The movie was a huge hit and Stallone was praised for his convincing personification of Rambo.

Stallone continued launching the First Blood and Rocky series which, although did not recreate the same magic the first movies did, were well accepted by the audience.

Stallone underwent rigorous training and fitness programmes to achieve the look of his characters. He is said to have consulted Mr Olympia Franco Columbu to develop the look for Rocky II and Rambo II movies.

Introduction

He is the embodiment of religious freedom, a strong propagator of racial justice and a man who triumphed over many obstacles to become one of the most celebrated sportsmen in the world. He is none other than Muhammad Ali, the man who BBC credited as the ‘Sports Person of the Century,’ the man who not only won the world with his capacities as a heavyweight champion, but also shunned and inspired the world at the same time when he started to practice Islam.

Early life

Born on January 17th, 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky, Muhammad Ali was christened as Cassius Marcellus Clay Junior. Coached by Joe E. Martin, he was directed towards boxing at an early age, particularly after a thief stole his bicycle when he was only 12 years old. Then, Martin taught him how to ride. During the last four years of his amateur career, he was trained by boxing cut man Chuck Bodak and went on to win six Kentucky Golden Gloves titles and a gold medal in Light Heavyweight in the 1960 Summer Olympics. Held in Rome, this Summer Olympics was the beginning of his full fledged boxing career.

From being an amateur to a Professional

Cassius Clay made a debut in the professional area on 29th October 1960. He not only won a six round over Tunney Hunsaker, but went on to win almost all his fights. Known for vocally belittling the opponents he was able to fight most of his opponents, becoming the top contender for Sonny Liston in 1963.

Winning over Sonny Liston

What gave the biggest push to the career of Clay was his fight with Liston. The heavyweight championship, which was fought on February 25th 1964, stunned the world, which was till then rooting for Liston, the man with an intimidating demeanor and dominating presence in the ring. Known for his ties with the mob, Liston had just taken over Floyd Patterson, former heavyweight champion and meanwhile, Clay had been beaten by Jones and Cooper. But Clay proved to be an underdog winning the title by 7-1.

Popularity and exile

Clay became a legend when he decided to convert into Islam soon after the match. He changed his name to Muhammad Ali and fought a rematch with Liston in Lewiston where he won again. He then met Terrell, who was considered to be the toughest competition of Ali since Liston. He was unbeaten and called Ali as “Clay” much to his annoyance who considered that his slave name. The two fought one of the ugliest fights ever.

But soon, Ali was stripped off his title after he refused to draft for the Army service because of his conflicting views on Vietnam. Consequently, he was denied a license for boxing in each state and didn’t fight from March 1967 to October 1970. But that didn’t deter his spirits and after gaining a license to box by the City of Atlanta Athletic Commission, he fought with Joe Frazier and rewrote his name in history.

The Legend

Muhammad Ali signifies a number of things. Being an African American, he overcame the odds to become one of the most beloved boxers in the world. He didn’t fight during the best period of a sportsman’s life because of his views on Vietnam, went on to embrace a different religion and turned into a Sunni Islamist in 1975. Truly, with his magnetism and powerful personality, he took over the world!

However, when Constantinople fell into the hands of the Ottoman Turks, this trade became dangerous and difficult to tread for the Europeans. This led to a competition between the European countries to establish a sea route for trade in the lucrative business of spices. Christopher Columbus made this proposal to the Spanish crown and won his confidence. Under the patronage of the crown, Columbus undertook four voyages.

Although many other explorers had carried out such expeditions earlier, Columbus’ voyages opened up the Americas to the Europeans. Furthermore, his attempts at establishing permanent settlements in the islands of Hispaniola were triggers to the Spanish colonization of the New World.

Early Voyages

Columbus was born in 1451 in Genoa. His father was a weaver. As a young boy, he undertook his first voyage in 1476 on a ship bound to the island of Khios, in modern day Greece. His first voyage cost him almost his life as his ship was attacked and he had to save his life by swimming ashore to Portugal. He also undertook several other voyages in the Mediterranean and Aegis seas. He was also part of expeditions to Africa, which gave him a sound understanding of the Atlantic seas. Using this knowledge he devised a strategy to reach India.

Columbus first presented his plans to the Portuguese king and demanded a three ship fleet for the expedition. However, he was sent away. He next approached the Spanish monarchy which agreed to finance his plans and provided him all that he required for the expedition.

However, his calculations were mistaken by his estimate of the Earth’s radius.

First Voyage

Columbus set out on his first voyage under the patronage of the Spanish monarchy in the quest of the sea route to Asia in August 1492.

While Columbus himself captained the ship called Santa Maria, he had two other ships along his side-the Pinta and the Nina.

After about 36 days of sailing, Columbus reached the islands of Bahamas. He named the place San Salvador. He was greeted by natives who were willing to trade glass beads, cotton balls, spears and parrots with them. Columbus and his men were intrigued by the gold ornaments that the natives wore.

He also came to know that these natives were captured and sold off as slaves in some European countries.

Columbus explored the coast of Cuba. Before leaving the islands, he left some of his men, established a settlement La Navidad and took back some natives with him to be presented to the king.

Subsequent Voyages

His second voyage was to the Carribean islands.

He undertook his last voyage in 1502 along the eastern coast of Central America in an unsuccessful attempt to discover a route to the Indian Ocean.

Columbus’ attempt at colonizing and creating a base for slavery in the Cuban islands angered the Spanish throne and he was arrested for the same.

He was stripped off his riches and titles.

Although Columbus is credited for opening up the American islands to the Europeans, he is also accused of destruction of the native culture of the islands he explored.

Columbus died in May 1506 at the age of 54, still believing he had discovered a shorter route to Asia.
