Explain the role of Ti plasmids in biotechnology.
Answer
Ti plasmid (tumour-inducing plasmid) refers to the plasmid of Agrobacterium tumefaciens. A. tumefaciens is a plant pathogen and is known to produce tumours in the plants it infects.
Role of Ti plasmid in biotechnology: Ti plasmid can be modified into a cloning vector by removing the genes responsible for pathogenicity.
