Chapter 3 Deep Water

The story is about William Douglas that how he lonqued his fear of water. William Douglas wanted to learn swimming so he went to Y.M.C.A. swimming pool where a misadventure happened with him. He was sitting near the edge of the pool then a strong boy with good muscular personality yelled him “Hi Skinny” and picked him & tossed him into the pool. He was sinking down in the water and was planning that he will hi the bottom and will jump-off like a cork and will be flat on it and would paddle with legs near the surface of water. But nothing happened wording to his plans he tried once but failed, he tried second time but he was so frightened and scared, his legs was frozen and he tried to suck air but swallowed the water again and again he was swimming down he had tried third time but he was falling suffocating ad became.

  • Q1 What is the “misadventure” that William Douglas speaks about?
    Ans:

    The misadventure was very horrible for him. William Douglas was sitting near to the edge of swimming pool when he saw a big bruiser of a boy, who was very strong and had great muscles was almost eighteen year old, he yelled “Hi skinny” to William Douglas and picked him up and through him in the pool, he landed in the sitting position, swallowed water, and went at the bottom and was very frightened.


    Q2 What were the series of emotions and fears that Douglas experienced when he was thrown into the pool? What plans did he make to come to the surface?
    Ans:

    When William was thrown into the pool he was frightened but not was so much scared as to die. While fallen into the water he was ready with the plan that when his feet hit the bottom, he will make a jump and would come to the surface and will lie flat on it and will paddle to the edge of the pool. He thought that he would jump-off like a cork but instead, he came up slowly and opened his eyes saw nothing but only water.


    Q3 How did this experience affect him?
    Ans:

    When this incident happened after that he was weak and trembling. He couldn’t eat that night. For days he had haunted for in his heart. He never went back to the pool. He was started avoiding air water related adventures.

  • Q1 Why was Douglas determined to get over his fear of water?
    Ans:

    The fear of water didn’t left his back as he wanted to enjoy all water activities like canoeing, boating, swimming, fishing etc. but his fear made it impossible to injury as these things.


    Q2 How did the instructor “build a swimmer” out of Douglas?
    Ans:

    For every three months he was attached with a belt. He went back and forth across the pool. On each trip across the pool a bit of panic seized him. Each time instructor made him waved his hold on the rope and he went under, come of the old terror returned and freezed his legs. Then he taught him to put his face under water and exhale, and to rave his nose and inhale held him at the ride of the pool and taught him kick with his legs. He practiced a lot and finally instructor told him that you are ready to swim. Thus piece by piece he built a swimmer.


    Q3 How did Douglas make sure that he conquered the old terror?
    Ans:

    He had finished his swimming training but didn’t stop there. He wanted to check his confidence so he swam alone in the pool. Then he went to Lake Wentworth to dive. Where he tried everything which he had learned from the instructor. He felt some fear and laughed and said “well Mr. Terror, what do you think you can do to me?” He fought back and finally during his diving expedition in the warm lake. He realised that he had completely conquered his old terror.

    Ans:

    One day at Y.M.C.A swimming pool, he was sitting near to the edge of a body, with good muscles yelled to him “he skinny” and picked him up and taught him into the pool, he was started sinking and scared not as to die and while swimming down he made plan that when he would touch the bottom of pool, he will jump-off with legs and come to the surface and will be that on it but nothing happened according to his plan this lungs were ready to burst. But when feet hit the bottom he summoned all his strength. He imagined he would bob to the surface like a cork instead he came up slowly. He failed to each the surface of water, swallowed and chocked. He tried to bring his legs up, but they were hung as dead weights, paralysed and wigged. A great for was pulling him down and he screamed but his throat was chocked or freezed. He tried it second this but nothing happened. Then he started down a third tome. He plucked for air and got water, then all effort and he was very slander and forgot all his plans and he layer unconscious.


    Q2 How did Douglas overcome his fear of water?
    Ans:

    He was not able to forgot this fear due to which he was not able to enjoy water related activities like fishing trips, canoeing swimming, and boating Weller over then he divided to heir an instructor and will learn swimming then his instructor put a belt around him and it was attached to a rope Douglas went back and forth across the pool. He made him refused hold on the rope. Piece by piece he was overswimming his fear. Instructor taught him to inhale and exhale and hold his breathe under the water. He taught him to how to move legs and he practices it hundred times and leaned swimming. Then he went to Lake Wentworth trigs island he swam two miles across the cakes. He now waived and had conquered his fear of water.


    Q3 Why does Douglas as an adult recount a childhood experience of terror and his conquering of it? What larger meaning does he draw from this experience?
    Ans:

    Douglas had suffered from two fears in his childhood which had made a great import on his future joys. He was not able to enjoy fishing trips, canoeing swimming and boating due to his fear. He hired an instructor and finally conquered his fear of water.

    He draws a great meaning of life from his scary experience. He almost lost hope of being alive after tries a lot of times to come up from the water but he failed. He knows, “In death, there is peace that is terror only in the fear of death”. Thus what matters most is the will to him. As roosevelt said in the last “All we have to fear in fear itself”. Therefore non one should give up in the life. Only by will power and hard work one will be able to achieve secures and to highest peace of life.
