Chapter 1 The Last Lesson

The story “The last lesson” is being narrated by a school boy named “Franz”, who is a very lazy boy, and likes to play. One day he was going to school and was worried about the questions on the participles which would be asked to him by his teacher named Mr.Hamel who is very cranky in nature. Franz don’t like his teacher in the way to his school he saw a bulletin-board full of bad news. He was amazed become usually, when school began, there was a great battle, which could be heard from the near sweets, very loud sounds of children, the teacher’s great Euler rapping on the table. But on that day it was very quite as seems on Sunday. The class was failed with students and empty last desks were filled with villagers and everyone and everything was quite and focused. He was stunned as these things never happened before. The Mr. Hamel told him that an order from Berlin has passed here in which from Berlin has paused here in which from hence formed only German would be taught in the schools of Alsace and Lorraine. He was shocked after knowing this and felt bad for his school and behaviour. He started loving his teacher Mr.Hamel and the books were no more burdens for him and books were just like friends which he never wants to lose. He started thinking about they can’t stop French pigeon from cooing. And got the thing that how precious is French language for them. And started respecting his language and regret to never learn French. And in the pain of this. He started “vive la France!” which means “long lives France”.

    Ans:

    Franz was expected to be prepared with participles because his teacher M.Hamel had discussed with class that he will be going to question them on participles. As he didn’t know about participles.


    Q2 What did Franz notice that was unusual about the school that day?
    Ans:

    In normal days, school begins with a lot of notice and cheerful faces of children. The environment of school and noises can be heard from the near streets. But that day was very unusual as there was all quiet and still. It was the day like that it seems on sunday. Mr.Hamel and students in the class was very sad and with worried faces.


    Q3 What had been put up on the bulletin-board?
    Ans:

    A bad news was there on the bulletin-board which was giving information to public about the order pawed there from Berlin which stated that now from very first moment only German Language will be taught in the schools of Alsace and Lorraine.

  • Q1 What changes did the order from Berlin cause in school that day?
    Ans:

    Everybody’s life got changed after winning the order from Berlin. That order took away all their happiness and cheers from their lives. The environment of school was changed. Mr. Hamel became more caring and sweet at the day. The class was filed with all students in fact the empty last benches was occupied by the villagers. Everybody was focusing in the class as they never did before. They were there to listen the last lesson in their native language. Everybody was sad for never used the precious opportunity to learn their native language.


    Q2 How did Franz’s feelings about M. Hamel and school change?
    Ans:

    Franz was sunned after being told by his teacher Mr.Hamel about the order from Berlin and that he is going to being taught their last lesson. His attitude towards Mr.Hamel was changed; he suddenly started loving his teacher and his teacher’s cranky nature. But now his school became a different meaning for him. His books, begs and school was no more a burden just like a fruited for him which he never wanted to lose.  He felt respect and pain for never listening in classes and never and near learning their French language.
