Answer:
The buccal cavity performs two major functions, i.e., mastication of food and facilitation of swallowing.
- Food is mixed up and masticated by saliva with the help of the teeth and the tongue.
- Mucus in saliva helps in lubricating the masticated food particles into bolus.
- Then the bolus is passed into pharynx and then into oesophagus for further digestion.
Arrangement of teeth:
Tooth consists of three regions: crown, neck and root. It is composed of hard, bone like substance called dentine that encloses the pulp cavity. The teeth which are embedded in the pits, sockets of the jaw bones named maxillae and mandible, these teeth are described as thecodont. The teeth that appear in two sets are diphyodont. There are various terms which describes the arrangement of teeth.
