On the basis of the mode of obtaining food, the organisms occurs in the ecosystem are classified into three main categories: Plants, animals and microorganisms. Plants are the producers, animals are the consumers and microorganisms are the reducers or decomposers which are also known as saprotrophs (sapros- rotton, trophe- nourishment). The microorganisms are mainly bacteria and fungi which obtain their food from the dead organic matter (dead plants and animals and their waste products). They obtain their food from the decomposition process (by which organic compounds are broken down into simple compounds).
