1. Why was the ‘holy man’ who gave Santosh’s mother his blessings surprised? (1)

Answer:

1. The holy man was surprised to know this because he had thought that Santosh’s mother wanted a son but the grandmother told him that they were not too much curious to have a son.

2. Santosh, from the very starting lived life as exactly she wanted. She was not restricted with the traditional way of life and was not ready to accept anything unreasonable. Where other girls wore traditional Indian dresses but she always preferred shorts.

3. Due to the prevailing custom in the family, Santosh was sent to the local village's school even though her parents could afford to send their children to the best schools.

4. When she turned sixteen and was under pressure to get married, she gave warning to her parents that she would never marry without getting proper education. Therefore, she left home and got herself enrolled in a school of Delhi.

5. When santosh’s parents refused to pay money for her education she politely inform them of her plansto earn money by her own by doing part time so that she could pay her school fees.Then finally her parents agreed to pay for her school fees in Delhi which shows that Santosh as a mentally strong girl and was very foccused to work hard towards getting herself properly educated before getting married like any other girl in the village.
