Chapter 2 Lost Spring

The “Lost Spring” story mainly raises the common issue that is child labouring which means children below the 14 years of age work in different places. This story is divided into 2 phases: In the first phase, the author narrates the story of Saheb who is a rag picker who picks gold (some coins) from garbage dumps and is always barefoot. The author asked them the reason behind their barefoot so one of them replied her mother didn’t reach to the shely on which there is his shoes which has no means to become thy are different pairs and colours. One of them replied it's our tradition to wander barefooted. And she wondered that they are making these emuses towards their poverty.

In the second phase, the author narrates the story of Mukes who has a different perspective from others in his community who wants to be a good motor mechanic. He lives in Firozabad which is known for glass bangles hub. Mukesh’s ancestors have been working in the glass industry which is very hazardous for their lives. They work in a dark room with no utilities and high room temperature in which the dust of bangles and polishes hurts their eyes and causes his grandfather blind. And now he don’t want to work in that industry and wants to be a motor mechanic.

  • Q1 What is Saheb looking for in the garbage dumps? Where is he and where has he come from?
    Ans:

    Sahib believed that he would find gold in garbage dumps so he was looking for gold in garbage dumps. He had come from Bangladesh. He came here with his mother because due to the storm he lost his home and gaon fields in Dhaka. So they left Dhaka and came here.


    Q2 What explanations does the author offer for the children not wearing footwear?
    Ans:

    When author saw shoeless ragpicker children then she asked them reason behind their bawfoots, so one of them replied my shoes is on the shelf and my mother didn’t wash there, if she able to take shoes then she will through them as both shoes of different pairs one said that it is not due to lack of money it is their tradition so author wondered if this is only an excuse to explain away a perpetual state of poverty.


    Q3 Is Saheb happy working at the tea-stall? Explain.
    Ans:

    No, Saheb was not happy because at this time he was no longer his own master. He had lost his freedom. He used to work on a tea-stall where he was being paid 800 rupees along the meal. But he lost his carefree look and lost his freedom to do anything as he was like a slaw there.

    Ans:

    Firozabad city was famous due to lot’s of beautiful and varieties of glass bangles, and also the city is the main hub of India’s glass blowing industries.


    Q2 Mention the hazards of working in the glass bangles industry.
    Ans:

    There were lot’s of hazards of working in the glass bangles industry. Workers had to work there with high temperatures in dingy cells without air and light. The harmful dwts of polishing of the bangles harms and injures their eyes. Not all people were able to grow up with good and proper eyesights.


    Q3 How is Mukesh’s attitude to his situation different from that of his family?
    Ans:

    Mukesh had a different sense of opinion and determination than his family. His ancestors were working there in bangle industries so they also wanted him to do that work. But he was different from them as he wanted to achieve his dream of becoming a good motor mechanic.

  • Q1 What could be some of the reasons for the migration of people from villages to cities?
    Ans:

    There can be lot’s of reasons behind migration of people from villages to cities according to their needs. Some move to cities for better employment facilities, food and most important for money. Some don’t have hospitals, schools, colleges so they migrated to cities. But some move to cities due to natural disasters like, flood, storm, drought, earthquake which sweeps away everything from people. So, In this sahib and his family moved to seemapuri from Dhaka, Bangladesh due to a storm which swept away everything in their home given fields etc.


    Q2 Would you agree that promises made to poor children are rarely kept? Why do you think this happens in the incidents narrated in the text?
    Ans:

    Yes we agree that the promises made to poor children are rarely kept. The people who promise the children are not even taken seriously. They make promises just to give them fake happiness and hope for that instant of time. But when children grow up, they realize it was a fake promise which hurts them a lot which should not be done by any people to make fake promises.

    In the tent, the author made a promise to Sahib, she encouraged them to study, to go to school and made promises jokingly that she will make the school for them but when the narrator came and asked her about school then she realized her mistake and got embarrassed in front of Saheb.


    Q3 What forces conspire to keep the workers in the bangle industry of Firozabad in poverty?
    Ans:

    There are lots of reasons which kept workers in the bangle industry of Firozabad. The main reasons are poverty, their needs, unfavorable social conditions, their narrow thinking to only work there. They could change their thinking and should start working in other fields and should not stick to single work in which they are not getting enough money to fulfill their needs.

  • Q1 How, in your opinion, can Mukesh realise his dream?
    Ans:

    The story “Lost Spring” reflects a very good value that users should have a good opinion and mentality to rely upon themselves in feature through a strong character named “Mukesh”.

    His perspective is different from the people of his community. He wants to be a good motor mechanic instead of doing slavery in bangle industry as his ansustors have been doing this from past many years.

    He plans to achieve his dream only by hard work and smart work and strong will power and determination towards his dream. He should go to a motor mechanic and under his assistance he can learn things well.


    Q2 Mention the hazards of working in the glass bangles industry.
    Ans:

    From the strong we get to know that workers who works in bangle industry don’t have eye gears, proper equipments which directly costs their lives they work in intemelly high temperature, with no ventilation room full of darkness in which sometime the dust causes their eyes for blindness and cuts, scratches, burns are quite common for them.
