Define the following terms:

(i) Colligative Properties

(ii) Molality (m)

Answer

(i) Colligative properties are the properties of the solution which depend upon the number of solute particles present in the solution irrespective of thier nature, relative to the total number of particles present in the solution.



Example : Relative lowering of vapour pressure of the solvent, depression of freezing point of the solvent, elevation of bioling point of the solvent,osmotic pressure of the solution.

 

(ii) Molality is defined as the number of moles of solute per kilogram of solvent. The SI unit for molality is mol/kg.
