Getting to Know Your Strengths at the Workplace

Being successful and satisfied at the workplace isn’t an easy job these days. There are hundreds of people working in the corporate sector these days. While some are climbing the ladder of success, there are others who have been stuck in the same unsatisfying and frustrating position for years. Which category do you belong to? Being successful isn’t just about hard work, dedication and commitment these days-being invaluable and indispensable at an organization is! So get to know your strengths at the workplace first and then work on them to make yourself a priceless resource and win yourself a satisfactory job profile and pay package.

Understanding Your Strengths

The first step to enhancing your value at your workplace is to analyse your strengths. Ask yourself questions such as ‘what is my biggest strength as a professional?’, ‘What sets me apart from my colleagues?’ ‘Why would a potential recruiter hire me?’. Through these questions you will understand what your best features are. If self introspection doesn’t help, speak to some of your closest friends or family members or close friends at work and you will be surprised to know what they reveal. Once you know your best skills, hone them further to make yourself the best at what you already are good at.

Understand Your Weaknesses

Just as it is important to know your strengths, it is important to know your weaknesses too. Follow the same procedure of speaking to people who know you well personally and professionally and find out which are the areas that need to be worked upon to make you a professional stronger person.

Know Your Job Well

Are you working in a particular job profile only because it pays well? Well, then there are not many reasons why you will be called a valuable resource. Most people look for jobs that pay well. But that isn’t enough. Most people perform well at jobs that are linked to their interests. Now that you know what your strengths are, analyse if your job profile suits your interests and if you can add any value to it through your strengths. If you do not enjoy what you do, you will not perform well. Analyse if your hardwork has any visible effects and if your company benefits in any way through your actions. Ask yourself if your company will be affected if you leave. Use your strengths to effect you work in such a manner so as to make you valuable to your company. If you still do not see much of a difference, perhaps it is time to reconsider your goals in life.

Do you know what your company’s goals are or what are the most important qualities that your company is looking for while recruiting employees? Hone your skills and strengths and tailor your offerings to meet the company’s requirements and you will grow with your company. An invaluable resource is one who contributes actively in the company’s growth and, hence, use your skills to visibly create a difference in the company’s brand name.

Leave Your Comfort Zone

Honing your skills doesn’t just mean improving your strengths. Let your employers know that you are interested in learning new skills so as to improve your worth. Analyse what you are good at, such as research, marketing, sales etc and ask for a transfer into relevant departments. This way you are adding more valuable skills into your repertoire and making yourself an indispensable asset at the company.
