Question 19

Write one difference between each of the following:

(a) Multimolcular colloid and macromolecular colloid

(b) Sol and gel

(c) O/W emulsion and W/O emulsion

Answer

(a) Multimolcular colloid and macromolecular colloid

Multimolcular colloid Macromolecular colloid
They are formed by the aggregation of large no. of atoms or molecule having diameter less than 1nm, e.g. sols of gold They are molecules of large size. e.g. Polymers like rubber.

(b) Sol and gel

Sol gel

The colloidal system in which dispersed phase = Solid

The colloidal system in which dispersion medium = Liquid

e.g. Muddy water, paints, cell fluids

The colloidal system in which dispersed phase = Liquid

The colloidal system in which dispersion medium = Solid

e.g.  Jellies, butter and cheese.

(c) O/W emulsion and W/O emulsion

 O/W emulsion W/O emulsion

An emulsion in which dispersed phase = Oil

An emulsion in which dispersed phase = Water

e.g. Vanishing Cream, Milk.

An emulsion in which dispersed phase = Water

An emulsion in which dispersed phase = Oil

e.g. Butter and cold cream
