Account for the following:
The lowest oxide of transition metal is basic whereas the highest oxide is amphoteric or acidic.
The lowest oxide of transition metal is basic because the metal has low oxidation state whereas, the highest oxide is acidic or amphoteric due to highest oxidation state.
In the low oxidation state some of the valence e-sâ of metal ion are not involved in bonding. Hence it can denote electrons and behave as base.
In higher oxidation state valence e-sâ are involved in bonding and are not available. Instead, effective nuclear charge is high.Hence, it can accept e-sâand hence behave as acid. (e-s means electrons)
