You can take up this field right after 10+2 or graduation. You can learn on the job or take up short time certificate courses while working and with time you’ll know what you are good at. It is a portable profession that affords one the opportunity to meet people and express creativity. You can do certificate courses related to running a parlour, massages, various skin treatments, Ayurveda also offers lot of courses for skin. Combination of few things will help you make a place for yourself in the market. So give it time and effort and once you have mastered the art then sky is the limit for you.

Attitude Aptitude & Skills

Cosmetologists should have a sense of form and artistry. They should enjoy dealing with the public, be sensitive and aware of the clients’ requests and preferences over their own, be able to tolerate the long intervals of standing required, and not be allergic to the products and chemicals used in their line of work.

Future Prospects

As a cosmetologist, your skills and talents could be employed in a variety of ways. You have the flexibility of working part-time or full-time to suit your needs. You may opt to work in a salon and become a specialist in the area of hair designing, hair coloring, wigs, skin care, make-up, or manicuring or even provide all of these services! You may decide to become a salon owner or manager. Some enter the merchandising field to become sales representatives, buyers, or direct sellers of products in the beauty industry. The scientific area of the industry offers opportunities as manufacturers’ representatives, demonstrators, research assistants, trade technicians, or technical supervisors. You may enter the vocational field to become a cosmetology instructor, a manager, or a school owner. Other possibilities include state board members and examiners, educational directors, stage and platform artists, or you may find work in television, film, or the fashion industry.

Sky is the limit if you can deliver what others can’t. If you succeed in establishing a reputation of a skilled stylist, contracts for doing hairstyles for ad-film shoots, fashion shows, feature shoots for magazines or TV serials will come to you by the dozen. An increasing population of working women with higher incomes is creating a growing demand for cosmetologists. There is a corresponding increasing demand for specialists in skin care and make-up.
