In the modern-day Gregorian calendar, June is considered the sixth month of the year containing 30 days in it. It is named after the Goddess of Roman – Juno.

As with any other month, June doesn’t start on the same day of the week but, as similar to March, it ends on the same day of the week every year.

History of June

In the previous version of the Roman calendar, the month of June was originally in the fourth position consisting of 30 days. However, by following a calendar reform in around 450 BCE, it becomes the fifth month of the year with a length of 29 days. Later on, June was again given the length of 30 days as per the Julian calendar.

In the Northern Hemisphere, June is the month that has most of the daylight hours and in the Southern Hemisphere, it has the shortest amount of daylight hours of the year. Hence, many celebrations take place in this month, especially marriages.

June was named after the Roman Goddess, Juno. As it is believed that Juno was the wife of Jupiter which was also equivalent to the Greek Goddess, Hera.
