Instrumentation Engineer

Instrumentation Engineering can be defined to be a field of engineering, that circumscribes the best from other core branches. It produces a product that is specialized, more efficient and a combination of the diverse aspects and properties of these branches of engineering.

Instrumentation engineering sprouted out of electrical engineering initially; it is the mix of electrical, chemical, mechanical, electronics and computer science faculties of engineering. Thus such specialized engineers have in depth knowledge of the hardware and software sectors of engineering. They can therefore function n any field with their vast array of learning. Instrumentation engineers are involved in the designing, manufacturing and maintenance of devices and systems that are used in the operation of physical aspects and quantities, like temperature and pressure.

Most good engineering colleges offer a course in instrumentation engineering. In some of these institutes, it may be combined with other branches or be a sub-part. But it is a specified and focused field of study. A student who opts for it should necessarily be good in mathematics and physics. And should possess an interest and bent of mind towards instruments and their handling. One has to know all about systems and their functioning.

Jobs are available in lots for instrumentation engineers. They can work in any field, be it electrical, mechanical, chemical or IT. They can opt for software as well as hardware companies. They find employment in chemical factories, medicine manufacturing companies, power plants, manufacturing plants, refineries, steel industries, to name only a few. Because of their knowledge base, and utility of it, they are usually the first to find placements. An instrumentation engineer can begin his career by earning a few lakhs a year, which can later on multiply.

It is a highly responsible field of functioning. In case of any faltering, the whole organization has to suffer. One needs great knowledge and interest. An enthusiastic professional can diversify to other fields. It provides immense opportunities to explore, and leads to other areas with experience. Instrumentation engineering grants one an edge over other engineering fields. The job is mentally stimulating and, enhances one intellectually and practically. Thus the exposure provided by this branch is not quite found in any other engineering area.
