Know your PAN CARD

Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a ten digit alphanumeric number, issued in the form of a card by the Income Tax Department. Every person who is applying for a Pan Card will have a unique PAN Number.

Who can apply?

Any person can apply; it may be a body corporate or partnership firm or an individual.

Who must have a PAN Card?

All the Assesses or Taxpayers , who are required to furnish their Income Tax Return or will be involved into financial transactions, where quoting PAN is Mandatory, must obtain a PAN Card.

Whether it is necessary to have some income source to apply for a PAN Card?

No. It doesn’t matter, a person is earning or not, he or she can apply for the PAN Card.

Can I have more than one PAN Card?

Having or obtaining more than one Pan Card is the violation of Law and invites a penalty too. Thus, any assessed have more than one PAN Card he should immediately return that PAN Card to the IT Department

Is there any restriction on age, nationality or region for application of PAN Card?

No. There is not any restriction on age, region or nationality. A foreigner can also apply for a PAN Card from Indian Income Tax Department. One can also submit an application for infant and underage Minor. But the application must be signed by a legal Parent or Guardian.

How a PAN number look like?

  • A Pan Number looks like AMKPR0747D.
  • It has Six Alphabets (A) and Four Numerical (N).
  • Its fixed structure is AAAA9999A.

Its fourth positioned alphabet denotes the applicant status:

For

  • Individual = P (Person)
  • Companies = C (Company)
  • Partnership Firm = F (Firm)
  • Hindu Undivided Family = H (HUF)
  • Association of Persons = A (AOP)
  • Trust = T (AOP Trust)
  • Body of Individual = B (BOI)
  • Local Authority = L (LA)
  • Artificial Juridical Person = J (AJP)
  • Government = G (Govt.)

The fifth Alphabet of the PAN Number is the first alphabet of the surname of the applicant.

For example

If Applicant is Uma Chaddha then her Pan number could be AMKPC7867D P for person and C of Chaddha.

Can I apply for a PAN Card through the internet?

Yes. Instead of an offline method of application, online application mode is convenient, faster and also preferable by the Income Tax Department.

In How many days I’ll get my PAN Card?

It will reach to you in 2 weeks of Receipt of the application in dept.

How can I apply for a PAN Card online?

Steps to be followed to apply for PAN Card online:

  1. Go to link https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/pan/form49a.html
  2. Scroll Down & select the Category.
  3. Fill the form 49A
  4. To fill the Area ,Range Code & AO Type Click the non international Taxation AO details
  5. Submit the form.
  6. If there are any errors rectify them & re-submit the form.
  7. A confirmation screen will be displayed.
  8. The applicant may either edit or confirm the same.
  9. A confirmation and acknowledgement number, which contains 15-digit will be displayed.
  10. Applicants should save & print this acknowledgement for reference.
  11. Individual Applicant should affix two recent colour photographs with white background in the space provided in the acknowledgement.

Point to be noted:

  1. In Acknowledgement in a given box applicants should do a signature or left thumb impression, but these should not be on photograph.
  2. If thumb impression is used, it should be attested by Magistrate or a Notary Public or a Gazetted officer under official seal and stamp.
  3. In the case of applicants other than individuals, authorized signatory should sign and affix the appropriate seal or stamp.
  4. Duly Signed acknowledgement with photograph(in case of individual) and Demand draft , if any and proof of identity and address should be send on below address:

Points to be noted:

  1. On envelope below line should be written ‘APPLICATION FOR PAN – Acknowledge number’ (i.e. APPLICATION FOR PAN – 1234567891234567)
  2. Your Application should reach within 15 days from the date of online application.

How much Fees I have to pay?

  • If Communication address is within India:
    • The Fees is Rs. 105 (Rs. 93 + Service Tax 12.36%)
  • If Communication address is outside India:
    • The Fees is Rs. 971 [(Rs. 93 + Dispatch Charges Rs. 771) + Service Tax 12.36%]

What is the Mode of Payment?

If Communication address is within India:

Payment can be made either by

  • Demand Draft
  • Cheque
  • Credit Card/Debit Card
  • Net Banking 

If Communication address is outside India:

The Payment can be done only by way of Demand Draft payable at Mumbai

Points to be noted:

  • Demand Draft and Cheque should be in favour of “NSDL-PAN”
  • The Acknowledgement number should be written on the back side of Demand Draft.

Which document can be served as Identity or Address proof?

Any of the following documents can be served as identity Proof:

  •         Matriculation Certificate or School leaving Certificate or Degree of a recognized educational Institution
  •         Copy of Credit Card or Bank Account Statement
  •         Copy of Depository Account Statement
  •         Copy of Water bill or Ration Card or Voter Identity card
  •         Copy of Passport
  •         Copy of Driving License

Any of the following documents can be served as Address Proof:

  •         Copy of Electricity bill or Telephone Bill
  •         Copy of Depository Account Statement
  •         Copy of Water bill or Ration Card or Voter Identity card
  •         Copy of Passport
  •         Copy of Driving License

If Applicant is Minor then copy of documents of any of his parents or guardian can be served as proof.
