PM Scholarship Scheme (PMSS): The Prime Minister’s Scholarship scheme aims at encouraging technical, post-graduate education for the dependent widows and children of the deceased or ex-service officers of Armed Forces, State Police Personnel, RPF, Para Military forces. The scheme was launched in 2006 and is funded through the National Defence Fund. The scheme was earlier applied through offline mode but from the year 2016-17, it can be applied through online mode. It is run by the Welfare and Rehabilitation Board, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. The scholarship is active throughout the year except January to April.

PM Scholarship Eligibility- Who can Apply?

The main eligibility conditions that are needed to fulfill for the scholarship are given below –

  • Candidate must be a dependent child, widow of the deceased, or ex-service officer of the Army. The student must be studying professional courses
  • mentioned in the list below. (lateral entry and integrated courses are not applicable).
  • The candidate must be pursuing grade 12, graduation, or a diploma.
  • The candidate must have obtained a minimum of 60% marks (To renew in consequent years, the candidate must obtain minimum 50% marks).

In Engineering: B.Tech, BE, B.Arch.

In Medical: MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BSMS, BUMS, BSC BPT, BSC MLT, BVSC AH, B.Pharma, BSC Nursing, BNYS, BSC Optometry, Pharmacy, Bachelor of Occupational Therapy.

Management courses: MBA, BCA, BBA, BPLAN, MCA, BBM.

In professional courses: BSC Agriculture, BSC Horticulture, B.ED, BFD, BSC Microbiology, Hotel Management Degree, COY Secretary, LLB, Bachelor of Elementary Education, BSC Biotech, BASLP, B Fisheries.

Qualifying Factors- What Documents are Required?

To apply for the PM Scholarship scheme, one needs the following documents to apply online. These documents will be scanned. Here is the list of documents:-

  • A serving card issued by the head of the Department
  • Certificate from the State Government that the personnel is killed in terror or Naxal attacks.
  • Discharge certificate
  • Death certificate (in case of personnel deceased)
  • Disability certificate(in case of disability personnel)
  • Mark sheets of last qualifying exam
  • Student ID proof
  • Gallantry award certificate (Applicable for Gallantry award winners)

The stepwise application process to apply for the PM Scholarship

  • Visit the official website of the National Scholarship Scheme @ www.scholarships.gov.in
  • Select the “New registration” option.
  • Click on “Register” after filling up the details.
  • User ID and password will be generated.
  • Log in with your User ID and password that you have received on registered mobile number.
  • You will now receive an OTP on your registered mobile number.
  • Verify the OTP and change the password if you feel so.
  • Fill up the application form
  • Upload the scanned copy
  • Submit the application form

To check Prime Minister Scholarship status, one should visit the official portal @ National Scholarship Portal www.scholarships.gov.in then click the “Status” option on the homepage. Fill up your registration number and date of birth as per filled during the application process. Select the search button and application status will appear.

Prime Minister scholarship Renewal

Anyone can apply for renewal freshly like a fresh application. It can be applied online throughout the year except for January to April. It can be applied within 1 year of the declaration of results. But, One should fulfill certain conditions like 50% of marks should be obtained in each semester or an academic year. One should pass all the subjects in a single attempt.

Prime Minister scholarship – Selection Process

The Ministry of Home Affairs is solely responsible for the disbursement of the scholarships but preference is given in this manner:

Category A: The 1st preference is given to the children and widows of CAPFs & AR personnel who were killed in action.

Category B: The 2nd preference is given to the children of Ex-CAPFs & AR personnel who got disabled in action.

Category C: The 3rd preference is given to the children and widows of deceased CAPFs & AR personnel who died during their service for causes attributable to Government service.

Category D: The 4th preference is given to the children of Ex-CAPFs & AR personnel who got disabled during their service with disability attributable to Government service.

Category E: The 5th preference is given to the children of Ex-CAPFs & AR personnel who have received gallantry children.

Category F: The 6th preference is given to the children of Ex-CAPFs & AR personnel (PBOR only).

Category G: Lastly, the preference will be given to the children of serving CAPFs & AR personnel (PBOR) subject to the availability of the scholarship.

The dependents of State Police Personnel who died in the Naxal, Terror attacks will also be given preference.

Terms and Conditions for PM Scholarship

  • Candidates should respond in the time immediately after receiving an email or SMS from Kendriya Sainik Board.
  • Email and Mobile Number registered once should not be changed as all messages are being sent to the registered number or email.
  • Candidates staying aboard and distance learning are not eligible.
  • The application will be rejected automatically in case any observation raised from ZSB, RSB and KSB is not rectified within the given time of 10 days.

Applications suspected will not be sent for scholarship and will be thrown-away at the same time.

PM Scholarship Rewards

Boys receive Rs.2500 per month while girls receive Rs. 3000 per month, paid annually. The time of scholarship may differ from one year to five years depending on the course length.

Q1. How can I apply for a PM Scholarship?

Ans. First register to the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) and fill the necessary fields and submit the application form online.

Q2. How can I acknowledge the receipt of the scholarship amount?

Ans. After receiving the receipt of the scholarship amount from Kendriya Sainik Board, the students are required to update Column 14 of Renewal Application by logging into the account using login ID and password by entering the Date of payment and amount received. This is a mandatory step to avail the benefits of PMSS otherwise it will be cancelled.

Q3. Can a candidate apply offline for the PM scholarship?

Ans. No, only online applications are accepted for the Prime Minister scholarship through the official website of NSP. Earlier, offline applications were accepted.
