Urologist

Urology is a specialization in the field of medicine that deals with the diseases of the urinary tract of females and males. The organs of the human body that urologists work on are the Kidney, Uterus, Urethra (female), Urinary Bladder, and male reproductive organs (testes, epididymis, vas defers, prostate, seminal vesicles, etc). And urologists are medical professionals who are educated, trained to diagnose, treat, and heal patients suffering from urological disorders.

Urology is a surgical specialty. Urologists should possess knowledge of internal medicine, gynecology, pediatrics, and other areas which are requisite. The specializations or sub-sects in urology are –

Pediatric Urology – Urological disorders in children are concerns of this.

Urologic Oncology – Related to cancer of the prostate, the adrenal glands, urinary bladder, the kidney, ureters, testicles, and penis.

Renal Transplantation,

Male Infertility, Calculi (urinary tract stones),

Female Urology – Treatment of the female urinary problems (urinary incontinence and pelvic outlet relaxation disorders).

Neurourology – Concerned with a urodynamic evaluation of patients, and erectile dysfunction or impotence.

Endourology – The surgery uses small cameras and instruments that are inserted into the urinary tract.

Laparoscopy – A surgical method to treat disorders.

Andrology – Focus is the male reproductive system, organs, diseases, and cure.

Reconstructive Urology – It is the reestablishment of the functionality of the genito-urinary tract.

It bears a close association with other branches of medicine, that of gynecology, oncology, nephrology, andrology, endocrinology, pediatric surgery, gastroenterology, etc.

Urologists are doctors who perform such urological functions. They study problems of the urinary tract. And perform laparoscopic surgeries related to it, such as surgery of the prostate, the bladder, uterus. They are also involved in the stone removing operations, clearing of blockages, cancerous growths, and in the repair of abnormalities. Urologists perform Vasectomy on men.

The effective combination of managing medical (non-surgical) problems, like urinary tract infection, and surgical problems, like cancer, are all done simultaneously by urologists.

To be able to get into Urology, you should have a science background with physics, chemistry, and biology combination in school. You should then apply for an MBBS degree from a reputed medical college. Once you have done so, you can opt for a specialization in Urology. Some good institutes you can apply to are – All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi, Sanjay Gandhi PG Institute of Medical Sciences in Lucknow, Christian Medical College in Vellore, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Kasturba Medical College Manipal.

Urologists perform a grave job of dealing with many branches of medicine all at once. The human urological and reproductive systems are closely associated and a problem in any of them affects the other. Such professionals work in extremely close collaboration with the other doctors.
