Question 11

One day Reeta went to a jeweller’s shop with her mother. Her mother gave old gold jewellery to the goldsmith to polish. Next day when they brought the jewellery back, they found that there was a slight loss in its weight. Can you suggest a reason for the loss in weight?

Answer

Jeweller dipped the jewelry in a liquid solution called aqua regia to polish a gold ornament. Aqua regia is a mixture of hydrochloric acid and nitric acid. The outer layer of gold is dissolved in aqua regia and the inner shiny layer appears. Reduction of weight of gold is occurs due to the dissolution of outer layer of gold in aqua regia solution.
