The 7th Month of The Year – July

According to the modern-day Gregorian calendar, July is considered the seventh (7th) month of the year containing 31 days and it is named after Julius Caesar.

In the common years, as similar to the month of April, July also starts as the same day of the week, and during the leap years, it starts and also ends up as similar to the month of January. But in the common years, July doesn’t end on the same day of the week as any other month.

History of July

According to the Roman calendar, July was originally the fifth month and consisted of 31 days. But during 450 BCE, after the reform of the Julian calendar, in the honor of Julius Caesar, the position of July was changed from fifth to seventh when January took the first place in the Julian calendar.

In the Northern Hemisphere, July is the warmest month of the year and in the Southern Hemisphere, it is the coldest one according to the modern-day Gregorian calendar and in Julius calendar too.

In the earlier version of the Roman calendar, July was the fifth month of the year and was commonly known as Quintillis in the Latin language. But during the reform of the Julian calendar, in the honor of Julius Caesar, the name was then changed to July. The other names of July are as follows:

  • In Latin, it is known as Quintillis Mensis which means the fifth month.
  • In Latin name, it is named Julius Mensis which refers to the month of July.
  • & in Middle English, it is called Julie.
