Precarious Predators

There are different kinds of predators – the really ferocious ones to the really precarious ones. Precarious predators are the ones which are not talked about in the same vein as Tigers, Lions, Cheetahs, Bears, and Leopards. They are the ones which are neither atop the food chain nor trailing behind it. But they are predators nevertheless. The following is a list of precarious predators – the predators that predate, but not without competition and struggle. They are not only predators; they can be preyed on as well by bigger and more powerful predators. Because they say that as with anything, nothing comes easy. Not even in the animal world.

Fennec Fox

This species of fox is the smallest. Interestingly it has the largest ears in the fox species. Quite a contradiction. Fennecs are chiefly found in the Sahara Desert. They use sonar-like hearing capabilities to detect prey underground.

African Palm Civet

This pint-sized animal is designed to kill. It looks like an offspring of a weasel and a cat. Civets feast on bird eggs, rodents, and birds. They are only found in the African continent. They are experts at climbing trees.

Carolina Dog

This species of dog is similar to the dingo species found in Australia. First found in the southwestern swamps of the United States in the early seventies, the Carolina Dog species has flourished. Today you will have hundreds of these animals in a controlled environment. These dogs are carnivorous and hunt in groups.

Meerkat

Meerkats are amazing hunters. Their hunting skills are something to be emulated. Meerkats have attained a cult status given that they were immortalized in films and television for their unique and quirky behavior. Meerkats chiefly prey on lizards, scorpions, eggs, and birds.

Hippopotamus

These creatures may look passive and nonchalant. But they are very aggressive when provoked. Although gentle looking, these native African animals kill human beings. When humans encroach their water territory, these animals become fierce killing machines.

Jungle Cat

The Jungle Cat is a native of Egypt. It is a smart and agile predator in this region. It hunts down rodents and birds. Jungle Cats also dive and swim in water to hunt fish. They are versatile when it comes to hunting. It is interesting to note that Jungle Cats take to water. Because it is a well-known fact that cats – big or small don’t like water.

Giant Otter

Giant Otters are found in great numbers in the Amazon. They are the best killing species in the depths of the Amazon. They mainly eat catfish. They don’t mind feasting on crabs either. Giant Otters are large mammals reaching a length in excess of six feet.

Baboon

If you think that the baboon is cute and cuddly, think again. This is a ravaging animal that won’t mind tearing into flesh without a moment’s hesitation. But strangely, given its fierce disposition, the baboon majorly eats fruits and plants. But given a chance it loves red meat. Especially goat meat. It can even hunt down gazelles. This primate is definitely becoming nastier by the day.

The Majestic Ganges

The Ganga is the national river of India. Meandering and curving on her sides, the Ganga descends from the Himalayas on to the plains and cleanses and purifies souls of many devotees. For the Hindus, the Ganga is the ultimate symbol of purity and every year they rush to her banks to wash off their sins and beg pardon from the gods for all their misdoings. The Ganga is not just a spiritually important river. She is responsible for the lives of many thousands who depend upon her waters and her fertile region for their livelihood. As much as 10 percent of the world population resides along her course and are dependent on her for their living.

Origin

  • The pristine icy glaciers of the Himalayas are the source of origin of the Holy Ganges. The river Ganga emerges out of an icy glacier called Gangotri, which is situated at an elevation of 13,800 feet above sea level.
  • The river gets its waters from other glaciers too namely, Nanda Devi, Dhaulagiri, Kanchenjunga, Mount Everest, Gurla, Gesaisthan and Mandhata. Many small rivers and rivulets join the Ganga along its course.
  • The Ganga travels along the northern plains of India and finally enters Bangladesh before emptying into the Bay of Bengal.

Historical significance

It is believed that the River Ganga flows out of the dreadlocks of Lord Shiva. According to folklore, Ganga descended from the heavens to the Earth on the request of King Bhagirath. The king’s relatives had been turned to ashes by a sage and they could only be revived with the waters of the River Ganga. It is said that pleased by King Bhagirath’s penance, the goddess Ganga agreed to descend to the Earth from the heavens and revive his relatives. She descended onto Lord Shiva’s matted hair from where seven streams sprang out in different directions. These seven streams are the rivers Bhagirathi, Jhanvi, Bhilangana, Mandakini, Rishiganga, Saraswati and Alakananda. All these rivers merge into the River Ganga at Devprayag.

Journey

  • The Ganges is 2, 510 km long and emerges from the Gangotri glacier as the Bhagirathi River. Situated at distance of 214 km from the source of the river is Devprayag, where the River Alakananda joins the River Bhagirathi to form the River Ganga.
  • After covering a distance of 229 kms, the river enters the plains of Rishikesh and flows westward to reach Haridwar. All these spots along the river course are important Hindu pilgrimage centres and attract hundreds and thousands of tourists every year.
  • The river continues her journey to the south and then the south-east to reach Allahabad where it joins the river Yamuna. This confluence is considered to be very sacred by Hindus. From here, the river moves on ahead to finally drain into the Bay of Bengal.

Sunderbans

  • One of the important landmarks formed by the River Ganga is the Sunderbans. It is the world’s largest delta formed by the rivers Ganga, Brahmaputra and Meghna. The Sunderbans are known for their rich flora and fauna and the Sundari trees which are found in abundance in this region.
  • It is also home to the largest number of tigers in the world and has been declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

GMAT All about getting the basics right

GMAT or the General Management Aptitude Test is a standard test taken by students who aspire to get admissions in the graduate business and management programs worldwide. This test is a computer based test, which is formulated in order to judge your skills that are required in the field of business management. It is one of the most unbiased tests around the globe that is capable of selecting the best of the candidates without the fear of favoring one person over the other.

Pattern

The GMAT test assesses a person’s analytical, writing, quantitative, verbal, and reading skills which can be further elaborated as follows,

1. Verbal Reasoning – This section is used to test applicants’ capabilities to identify complex relationships between words, concepts and different parts of sentence. This part assess applicant’s ability to understand written materials, to be able to correct them, reason the crux of the written part and to argue based on that. The question types in this section are reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and sentence correction.

2. Quantitative Research – One’s ability to analyze data, proper figures and interpret graphic data are tested in this section. In simple terms it judges how good an applicant is in algebra, geometry, arithmetic and quantitative reasoning. This part is quite scoring yet difficult. So even if you are confident enough about your abilities in the field of mathematics think twice and practice as much as you can.

3. Integrated Reasoning – This section is the newest addition in the GMAT format being introduced in June 2012. The idea of introducing this section is to test the applicant’s ability to evaluate data presented in multiple formats provided from various sources. It consists of 12 questions in 4 distinctive formats, which are graphics interpretation, two-part analysis, table analysis, and multi-source reasoning.

4. Analytical Writing Assessment – As the very name states this part requires a candidate to write a critical analysis of an argument provided to him/her within a time frame of 30 minutes. In the given time duration the candidate has to not only write an argument but rather a valid one after having been able to evaluate the reasoning behind a given argument. Later the essay is rated twice independently; first on the basis of computerized reading evaluation and then by a person at GMAC.

5. Scoring- The total scoring ranges to 200 to 800 and is based on the performance of a candidate in all the above mentioned sections. The scores are given in the increments of 10. So the higher your score is the better are their chances.

Preparation

Preparing for GMAT requires enough confidence and determination to do so along with at least a year and half of preparation. If a candidate is unsure about his/her method of preparation it’s advisable to take help from a renowned GMAT tutor or enroll themselves with a GMAT tutorial where they can receive proper guidance to study accordingly.

So, plan well and start your preparations now!

Muscling past exam jitters

The world has become a rat race and the levels of competition have increased to unimaginable extent. This has resulted in many students feeling examination jitters and exam stress, which not just affect their learning abilities, but in turn also affects their overall performance in an examination. Here are some of the ways in which you can muscle past exam jitters and score well.

Start preparing early

‘Well begun is half done,’ is a phrase that commonly describes how early preparation can give you better results. So, from the next time start your preparations early. Organize your notes, take care of the assignments and keep your study material at place. Then make sure that you read and revise every assignment that you did in class. This way, you will have a lesser burden of work each day and will be prepared well before the examination.

Allocate time

Allot time to your chapters. For instance, Chapter 1 of science shall be done in 1 hour and so on. If you are unable to complete it in allocated time, then move on to next. Preferably, revise topics in ascending order of their likability. For instance, if you don’t like a topic, revise it first and then close the exam you will only have likable topics to revise. Prefer on quality rather than quantity, which means that the duration of study shouldn’t be considered, rather the quality of what you understood shall be considered.

Take breaks

Preferably, a ten minute break after every one and half hours would refresh your mind and increase your attention span. This way you can divide your work in accordance to one and half hours. Give at least half an hour for walking in the garden. Otherwise, watch television for a while, but only for a while and not long.

Don’t take about exams at the dinner table

Families shouldn’t take exams while eating. Mothers can cook something special for children a day before the exam. But make sure that children don’t stuff up snacks while working and that dinner table isn’t the area for discussing examinations.

Try meditation

Meditation and deep breathing is the best way to relax. If you want to muscle past exam jitters in the most positive way, then try meditation. It will not only take off negative thoughts from your mind, but it will also help you to develop a greater attention span. This way you will be able to learn better.

Get some sleep and make list

Sleep is the best way to ensure that information is retained. So, don’t sacrifice sleep or you will end up feeling sluggish or lazy, thereby increasing anxiety levels. Also, make a list of your items required for the duration examination. Keep extra pens and water bottles to rehydrate yourself.

Don’t revise one hour before exam

Most of the time children revise everything an hour before exam, but this will only increase jitters and anxiety levels. So, make sure that you don’t revise an hour before the exam and rather revise 3 hours before.
