Christopher Columbus

Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer and traveller who set out to explore the world at a time when most Catholic theologians of his time considered the Earth to be flat and were hesitant to venture out into the sea. Europeans had enjoyed a land trade path called the ‘Silk Route’ to China and India, due to the Mongol Empire’s hegemony over the region. However, when Constantinople fell into the hands of the Ottoman Turks, this trade became dangerous and difficult to tread for the Europeans. This led to a competition between the European countries to establish a sea route for trade in the lucrative business of spices. Christopher Columbus made this proposal to the Spanish crown and won his confidence. Under the patronage of the crown, Columbus undertook four voyages.

Although many other explorers had carried out such expeditions earlier, Columbus’ voyages opened up the Americas to the Europeans. Furthermore, his attempts at establishing permanent settlements in the islands of Hispaniola were triggers to the Spanish colonization of the New World.

Early Voyages

Columbus was born in 1451 in Genoa. His father was a weaver. As a young boy, he undertook his first voyage in 1476 on a ship bound to the island of Khios, in modern day Greece. His first voyage cost him almost his life as his ship was attacked and he had to save his life by swimming ashore to Portugal. He also undertook several other voyages in the Mediterranean and Aegis seas. He was also part of expeditions to Africa, which gave him a sound understanding of the Atlantic seas. Using this knowledge he devised a strategy to reach India.

Columbus first presented his plans to the Portuguese king and demanded a three ship fleet for the expedition. However, he was sent away. He next approached the Spanish monarchy which agreed to finance his plans and provided him all that he required for the expedition.

However, his calculations were mistaken by his estimate of the Earth’s radius.

First Voyage

Columbus set out on his first voyage under the patronage of the Spanish monarchy in the quest of the sea route to Asia in August 1492.

While Columbus himself captained the ship called Santa Maria, he had two other ships along his side-the Pinta and the Nina.

After about 36 days of sailing, Columbus reached the islands of Bahamas. He named the place San Salvador. He was greeted by natives who were willing to trade glass beads, cotton balls, spears and parrots with them. Columbus and his men were intrigued by the gold ornaments that the natives wore.

He also came to know that these natives were captured and sold off as slaves in some European countries.

Columbus explored the coast of Cuba. Before leaving the islands, he left some of his men, established a settlement La Navidad and took back some natives with him to be presented to the king. 

Subsequent Voyages

His second voyage was to the Carribean islands.

He undertook his last voyage in 1502 along the eastern coast of Central America in an unsuccessful attempt to discover a route to the Indian Ocean.

Columbus’ attempt at colonizing and creating a base for slavery in the Cuban islands angered the Spanish throne and he was arrested for the same.

He was stripped off his riches and titles. 

Although Columbus is credited for opening up the American islands to the Europeans, he is also accused of destruction of the native culture of the islands he explored.

Columbus died in May 1506 at the age of 54, still believing he had discovered a shorter route to Asia.

HTET Exam (Haryana Teacher Eligibility Test)

To improve the quality of teaching in the country, almost every state in India conducts its own Teachers’ eligibility test. The government of Haryana conducts the Haryana Teachers Eligibility Test, also known as the HTET, which is a compulsory examination for all B.Ed candidates aspiring to become teachers in schools run by the government or private managements in the state of Haryana. Apart from this, the schools have also been given the liberty by CBSE to recruit teachers based on either the test conducted by states or on the ranks obtained in CTET (Central Teachers Eligibility Test), conducted by the central government. It has become mandatory for teachers to clear either of the examinations to secure the job of a teacher in any school across the country.

Examination Pattern

The examination pattern starts with filling the form along with the submission of a nominal examination fee as per the below mentioned schedule:

  • All Candidates except SC & Differently able- Rs.600/-
  • SC & Differently Able- Rs.300/-

 The HTET examination comprises two objective type question papers consisting of 150 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) in each of them. Each question is worth 1 mark thereby totaling 150 marks. The details of the question papers are as follows:

  • Paper I Syllabus: To become teachers for classes I-V in Haryana primary school.
  • Paper II Syllabus: To become teachers for classes between VI and VIII in Haryana upper primary school.
  • Level 3- for those candidates who are interested in TGT and PGT.

Admission Criteria

A person scoring a minimum of 60% marks in the examination would be considered to have cleared the examination. However as per the Haryana Government’s extant reservation policy of Haryana Teachers Eligibility Test, the government can decide to give 5% concession to candidates belonging to the SC/ST, OBC, differently able persons etc. Apart from this the candidate must note that having cleared the HTET examination would not confer them the right of employment or recruitment, as this examination is just one of the important factors of the eligibility criteria for appointment.

Scoring and Negative Marking

There is no negative marking associated with the HTET examination. Each paper consists of 150 multiple choice questions with each carrying 1 mark. For every question answered correctly the candidate is awarded 1 mark and for every wrong answer 1 mark is deducted from the total.

Eligibility Criteria

1. Teacher for Classes I-V (Primary Stage)

Candidates appearing for the HTET should have cleared their Senior Secondary or its equivalent with minimum 45% marks along with Diploma in Elementary Education / 4 year B.El.Ed / 2 year Diploma in Education in Special Education or with Bachelor Degree (50 % marks) and B.Ed qualification.

2. Teacher for Classes VI-VIII (Elementary Stage)

For applying in this segment the aspiring candidates should have a regular Bachelor Degree with 2 year D.Ed./ B.Ed. or 4-year Bachelor in Elementary Education (B.El.Ed) / 4-year BA/ B.Sc.Ed. or B.A. (Ed.)/B.Sc. (Ed.) / B.Ed. (Special Education) with 50 percent in BA or B.Sc. (Both Appearing & passed Candidates are eligible to apply under this criteria).

3. For Lecturers of Class XI-XII

Applying under this category for the post of a lecturer in various subjects would require the candidate to have cleared their post graduation in the concerned subject with no less than 0% marks from a recognized university. Also the candidate must have a matric with Hindi/Sanskrit or Sr. Secondary / Graduation / Post Graduation with Hindi as one of the subjects.

Note: General conditions for all the three levels the validity are as follows:

  • Validity Period of HTET qualifying certificate for appointment will be five years from the date of issue of qualifying certificate.
  • There is no restriction on the number of attempts a person can take for acquiring a HTET Certificate.
  • Candidates who have already qualified STET will have the option to appear in the fresh HTET to improve their score, if they so desire.

Haryana Government and Haryana Board of School Education (HBSE) invites Online Application Forms who fulfill the Eligibility Criteria under the Exam Section to conduct the HTET for year 2012-13. HBSE also announced the Exam Date of HTET as 1st and 2nd June 2013.

Admit Card

Since the Admit cards for the HTET will not be sent by the post, the eligible candidates are required to download his/her admit card from the website (www.hbse.ac.in or www.htet.nic.in) with effect from 25.05.2013 onwards. It is mandatory for the candidate to carry a printed copy of their Admit Card to the examination center, failing which might lead them to being restricted from appearing in the examination. In case of any discrepancies in the particulars of the candidate on the Admit Card, the candidate should immediately contact the Special Examination Branch of the Board to correct the mistakes.

Result

The result of the HTET comes out after a month of the commencement of the examination. The results are made available online on the www.hbse.ac.in or www.htet.nic.in websites.
