Why is zinc not extracted from zinc oxide through reduction using CO?
The standard Gibbs free energy of formation of ZnO from Zn is lower than that of CO2 from CO. Therefore, CO cannot reduce ZnO to Zn. Hence, Zn is not extracted from ZnO through reduction using CO.

Very creative anawer
Very impressive answer. This helped me a lot. Thank you
For those who can't understand, please take a look at the ellingham's graph. First, the equation could be split into 2 equations: 1) 2ZnO --> 2Zn + O2. And 2) 2CO + O2 --> 2CO2. Now take a look on the ellingham's graph. See that the graph of eq(1) is lowe than graph of eq (2) which means that CO can't reduce ZnO to Zn, therefore, CO is not used.
Cant understand pls elaborate
Thanx .this answer is more impressive
