What happens when

(i) magnesium is burnt in air

(ii) quick lime is heated with silica

(iii) chlorine reacts with slaked lime

(iv) calcium nitrate is heated ?

Answer

(iii) When chloride is added to slaked lime, it gives bleaching powder.

Ca(OH)2  +  Cl2   CaOCl2  +  H2O

                           Bleaching powder

 

(iv) Calcium nitrate, on heating, decomposes to give calcium oxide.

2Ca(NO3)2(s)   2CaO(s)  +  4 NO2(g)  +  O2(g)
