Schools in Delhi shifted to hybrid mode amid rising air pollution

Schools in Delhi shifted to hybrid mode amid rising air pollution

Delhi-NCR is suffering again from severe air pollution now-a-day. As the Air Quality Index (AQI) reached the ‘severe’ category, the Delhi government issued an advisory to reimpose GRAP4 (Graded Response Action Plan 4). The schools in Delhi have been shifted to hybrid mode due to rising pollution. The aim of these restrictions is to reduce the level of pollution and ensure the safety of citizens.

New rules for Delhi schools amid rising air pollution

  • Hybrid mode studies: The administration has directed that hybrid mode (online and offline) should be adopted in all classes except class 10 and 12. This decision has been taken keeping in mind the health of the children. Schools will run in hybrid mode till the next order comes.
  • Health Safety: Schools will have to ensure that appropriate measures are taken to protect students from pollution.

Other major restrictions

  • Vehicle restrictions: Ban on the operation of BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel vehicles.
  • Construction activities stopped: Non-essential construction and demolition activities completely stopped.
  • Reduce the use of private vehicles: Citizens have been appealed to use public transport more.

Effects and solutions of pollution

The main reason for Delhi’s toxic air is slow winds, low temperatures and increasing fog, which traps pollutants in the atmosphere. Experts suggest that wearing masks, staying indoors, and using air purifiers can be useful to deal with this situation.

Message from Delhi Government

The government has appealed to the people to leave the house only when necessary and follow the rules issued for pollution control.

Knowledge and Work: How Knowledge Impacts Your Ability To Dominate Your Workplace

Knowledge and Work dominance

Knowledge and Work: In the highly competitive environment that is found pervasively at all work places and educational institutions, there is a high demand for knowledgeable people and an equal dearth for them, time and again. As the technology and fields of study evolve, knowledge becomes an imperative tool and resource that commands top positions and an aura of authority around a person.

How Knowledge and Work Related?

Knowledge resembles a mound of relevant data and information that is possessed in the minds of few people around the world. In this scenario, a person’s collection of information becomes a data repository, which top organisations and multi national corporations wish to exploit, for the benefit of their functioning.

It is no hidden truth that in every organisation, there always exists a layer of professionals, individuals or groups that are regarded highly among their co-working space, for their ability to use their tacit knowledge and work; and offer beneficial solutions to their organisation.

How is knowledge relevant in the context of an organisational environment?

Knowledge is an imperative tool, a resource, in itself. Though intangible and mostly tacit, knowledge is capable of altering the course of organisational efforts, towards the direction of success. There is an implicit reason why many organisations keenly look forward to hire the top and most capable talent in the industry for their company. It is also seen that a common phenomenon of attracting capable employees, from other competitor organisations, is quite common, on the pretext of offering higher salaries and perks. So why exactly do organisations indulge in such behaviour? The answer is simple and obvious. Everyone wants to be equipped with the best talent in the industry and to do so, they are willing to go to great lengths to staff the best personnel.

Knowledge is the edge of the boundary that separates one organisation form other, puts the managerial staff in a position to gain advantage and brings optimal gains to the organisation in terms of revenue and goodwill. Many organisation are known best, not for their product or service but for their talented personnel. Today, there are many living examples to substantiate this claim.

By tapping into the knowledge base of an employee, an organisation can extract the much needed resources and information, in turn, to conduct their course of business in a manner that yields optimum gains for them.

What is the difference between knowledge and information?

Knowledge and information differ from one another in several aspects. Not only are they implicitly different, their mere base is segregated to reflect very well, why exactly knowledge is much more powerful than information.

While information can be explained in terms of refined data that assists in making sense of a vast mound of data, knowledge is what allows powerful use if that information, which makes sense and gives the much needed edge to an organisation. Information can only take one as far as knowing some data but it is information that assists in comprehending completely what that data implies and take managerial decisions related to that data. Without knowledge, information makes no sense.

Why is knowledge regarded as a powerful tool?

Needless to say, having understood the relevance of knowledge, it does not take much time for a person to understand that it is an asset, a powerful resource and a tool that can give the much needed edge over others. There is a reason why corporations and organisations have a preference for specialised personnel in various fields. There is a reason why people with a detailed study in a particular field, are chosen over those who undergo basic course modules. It is the vast mound of knowledge that is deposited in these individuals that makes them stand apart from their competitors.

Knowledge drives people to command authoritative positions in top corporations and multi nationals. It is a like a powerful gear, with which an individual finds himself equipped to take charge and manoeuvre the course of an organisation in the direction, which he deems fit. Needless to say, knowledge ends up taking the form of a powerful tool in the context of an organisation and its employees.

Knowledge and Work dominance

It is easy to decipher that people with knowledge deposited in their mind, are in a far better position to command top positions in top companies, when compared to ordinary candidates.

  • The first distinction between knowledge and information comprehends itself in the selection process itself. Preference is given to candidates possessing a specialty in a particular field.
  • Next, knowledge expresses its dominance over information, by commanding top positions that are otherwise not made available to candidates from an ordinary course. In this way, knowledge is able to command dominance over information, by standing superior in terms of its demand.
  • Even in the general work environment, people with apt knowledge and resources, are regarded highly by their co-workers and respected for their authority. They are approached most commonly to address problems that demand high level authority and consideration. There is a great source of power that emanates from such daily activities.

Knowledge has been regarded highly in work environment in the past and continues to be the top source of work related dominance in organisations even today. One can command great respect and top positions by using his knowledge in the favour of any organisation. In this way, knowledge manifests itself as a powerful source of respect and dominance in work environment.

Final Say

Knowledge and Work dominance should not be confused with unnecessary pressures or abusive use of authority on co-workers. It simply implies the use of the apt resources for the betterment of the work place and its advancement. Knowledge should be used in an encouraging manner to advance the course of an organisation and enable the people within it to progress as well. So, in order to be the limelight of your workplace all you need is adequate knowledge. Gather all possible knowledge that you can and be assured of putting your best foot forward.

How To Choose The Best Optional Subject In IAS Mains For Success

How To Choose The Best Optional Subject In IAS Mains

Choosing the right optional subject in IAS Mains examination is a critical decision that can influence your success in the Civil Services Examination. With over 20 optional subjects available, narrowing down the one that aligns with your strengths, interests, and preparation time is vital. This guide explores the key considerations, popular options, and strategies to help you make an informed choice.

Guide To Choose Best Optional Subject In IAS Mains

Since 2013 Mains the UPSC has removed the second optional subject. It means that, the candidates need to select just ONE optional subject which would consist of two papers each holding 250 marks. However, the task of choosing an optional subject in IAS Mains exam is one disturbing question which scares the students who are willing to appear for the Civil Service exam.

What is an Optional Subject in IAS Mains?

An optional subject in the IAS Mains examination plays a critical role in determining the overall score of a candidate. The Mains exam consists of nine papers, of which two are dedicated to the optional subject. Each paper carries 250 marks, making it a total of 500 marks out of the 1750 in the Mains.

The optional subject in IAS mains offers candidates an opportunity to showcase their proficiency in a field of their choice, regardless of their educational background. It allows aspirants to select a subject they are comfortable with, enabling them to perform well. With a well-chosen optional subject, candidates can gain an edge in this highly competitive exam.

Eligibility and Overview of Optional Subject in IAS Mains Selection

The beauty of the IAS Mains optional subject selection lies in its flexibility. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) does not impose restrictions based on educational background or academic qualifications. This means candidates from diverse fields, such as engineering, medicine, humanities, or science, can choose any optional subject from the list provided by UPSC.

Key Points to Consider:

  • No Academic Restriction: A candidate with a degree in engineering can choose history, and a medical graduate can select public administration if they find it appealing.
  • Subject Relevance: Candidates often prefer a subject aligned with their educational background or one that overlaps with the General Studies syllabus to maximize efficiency.
  • Language Preference: Some optional subjects are also available in regional languages, which can benefit candidates more comfortable with their mother tongue.

Ultimately, the right optional subject in IAS mains choice depends on a candidate’s interest, comfort level, and availability of resources.

Detailed Tips for Choosing the Best Optional Subject

It is always recommended to choose the optional subject before time, so as to gather ample time to arrange notes and books for preparation.

1. Familiarity with the subject

  • Usually one should select an optional subject with which he/she is familiar with or has studied it till the graduation year. There is no rule in the selection of a subject if you are familiar with its basics. For example: science and engineering students can also pick subjects like history, anthropology, sociology, geography, psychology, political science and public administration. This is possible because there is a vast amount of study material present in these subjects.
  • It is important to keep in mind that you might be skillful in the technical subject during your study days but if you have grown out of touch with it, it might get tougher for you to thorough the syllabus all over again.

2. Try to Avoid Common Option

IAS exams are full of competition as every year lakhs of candidates from all over India sit to decide their future through these tests. Keep in mind that at the Mains level the competition is among the people who have selected the same subject. So make sure you choose a subject which is not opted by too many people.

3. Syllabus Length and Manageability:

  • It is important for the candidates to analyze the syllabus from the previous years along with the question papers so as to get familiar with the past trends. Also, do not miss an opportunity to gain some feedback/advice from your seniors and mates who are quite expert in the subject.
  • Do not rate any subject as bad. For example: History is good if you can offer more than 4-5 hours daily. Similarly, Geography can be a good option if you can manage at least 4 hours every day. Looking at other options, Public Administration Sociology can be perfected if you are ready to take out 2-3 hours daily.
  • It all depends on the amount of time you can spend in a day as well as your liking towards that subject. If you are gifted with very good memory then a technical subject can be thought of as an option. Take a carefully calculated decision after understanding the different aspects of selection.

4. Scoring Optional

It is quite common that most IAS beginners select an optional subject simply because it is ‘scoring’. Some of the optional subjects that are considered scoring include Public Administration and Geography. Although Geography has returned marks with 400+ in IAS Mains, several candidates are able to score 340+ and 350+ in Public Administration since the past few years. Also, the average marks acquired by Mains candidates in 2008 Mains were close to 266 which is quite high.

Popular IAS Optional Subjects with Pros and Cons

Popular options are quite common among most IAS aspirants. There is a reason they are termed as popular. The options that come under this definition are Public Ad, Geography, Sociology, Psychology and History. It is believed that these four IAS optionals alone form about 50 percent share of the Mains, while the remaining 22 optionals for the rest.

Optional Subject Advantages Disadvantages
Geography Map-based questions, semi-scientific Lengthy syllabus
Public Administration Overlaps with GS papers, concise syllabus Highly competitive
Sociology Simple concepts, scoring Limited material availability
History Detailed resources, overlap with GS Requires extensive reading
Psychology Conceptual and logical Requires self-study discipline

But why are these optionals known to be so popular? Here are some reasons:

  • Subjects such as Pub Ad and Geog have definite syllabus. Also, Pub Ad consists of limited syllabus especially for P2, which can be covered within 5 months or so.
  • The candidate requires limited coaching for Pub Ad since most of the syllabus involves self-study.
  • The History optional for IAS is indeed popular due to the presence of many History post graduates and even graduates holding history as a subject.
  • Geography is known to be a semi-scientific subject and a preferred choice among Engineers and Doctors due to its principles, laws and map-based questions.
  • Sociology is simple to understand and very interesting because the topics covered are related to the society we live in.
  • Psychology has pulled a lot of eyes because it is a combination of all the above mentioned attributes.

Least Popular Optional Subjects

While certain optional subjects like Geography and Public Administration are highly favored, there are lesser-known subjects that often yield high scores for candidates with a strong background or keen interest. These subjects, although less popular, can offer unique advantages:

  1. Literature (Various Languages):
  • Advantages: Literature subjects allow candidates to leverage their command over a particular language and its literary traditions. It also provides a focused and finite syllabus.
  • Who Should Choose: Ideal for candidates passionate about reading, writing, and analyzing literary works.
  1. Veterinary Science:
  • Advantages: A technical subject with a defined syllabus. Scoring high is possible for candidates with a veterinary or zoology background.
  • Who Should Choose: Best suited for veterinary graduates or those with related academic expertise.
  1. Mathematics:
  • Advantages: Known for objectivity and a lack of ambiguity in answers. Offers high scoring potential for those adept at problem-solving.
  • Who Should Choose: Suitable for candidates with a mathematics or engineering background.

These subjects, though less opted for, allow candidates to stand out due to limited competition and high specialization.

Selecting an Optional Subject in IAS Mains With Previous Background

  • Many candidates who’ve graduated or done Masters in any of the subjects do opt for it in the CSE. It is quite helpful if you’re already familiar with the subject. Also, graduation in humanities does help as the most popular IAS optionals mentioned above are included under the “Arts” subjects. It means, if you are pursuing graduation or masters covering any of the Arts subjects and wish to take it up in the IAS mains, be sure you pursue it seriously and plan a focused approach.
  • Holding a previous base and interest in any of the optional subjects does offer you an extra edge. You need not have to go through the deepest of logics since you already are familiar with most of the concepts. This is indeed one of the most crucial factors in selecting the right optional for IAS rather than simply going for the popular or scoring options. Candidates who have opted for the most obscure subjects such as Literature, Mathematics or Veterinary Science have scored wonderfully in the Mains simply because their love with their optional was immense.

Scoring Strategies for Optional Subject in IAS Mains

Scoring well in the optional papers requires a smart and consistent approach. Here are some proven strategies:

Answer Writing Practice:

Practice writing structured, coherent, and concise answers regularly. Use examples, diagrams, and data wherever applicable to enhance presentation.

Understand Question Patterns:

Analyze previous year questions (PYQs) to identify recurring themes and the pattern of questions. This helps in focusing on high-yield topics.

Join Test Series:

Enroll in a reputed test series to evaluate your preparation and receive constructive feedback. It also builds time management skills and improves accuracy.

Revise Consistently:

Regular revision is crucial to retain concepts and facts. Focus on writing quality answers during revisions rather than rereading the material.

With disciplined preparation and a targeted approach, candidates can achieve high scores in their optional papers.

Mistakes to Avoid While Choosing Optional Subject in IAS Mains

The choice of an optional subject is a decision that can impact your IAS journey significantly. Avoid these common pitfalls to make an informed choice:

Relying Solely on Others’ Opinions:

Do not base your choice entirely on the recommendations of friends, seniors, or coaching institutes. What works for one person may not work for another.

Ignoring Interest and Syllabus Analysis:

Selecting a subject without analyzing its syllabus or matching it with your interest can lead to burnout and poor performance.

Underestimating Less Popular Subjects:

Many candidates shy away from opting for less popular subjects, assuming they are less scoring. In reality, these subjects often have lower competition and well-defined syllabi.

Take time to evaluate your strengths, interests, and available resources before finalizing your optional subject. A carefully considered decision will set you on the path to success.

Conclusion

IAS exam is no joke and one must take every decision with a sane head so as to move forward to achieve the fixed goal. Do not forget to consult your seniors beforehand in order to gain a clear vision. They would surely help in making you realize about your strengths and weaknesses, based on which you can move forward in making a selection. Also, refer the internet in order to check out how various successful candidates made their way through.

However, they differ in format, scoring, and sometimes even in the skills they emphasize. The IELTS is known for its straightforward approach, to evaluating listening, reading, writing, and speaking. On the other hand, the TOEFL is predominantly internet-based and focuses on American English, making it a frequent choice for US-bound students.

Why English Proficiency Tests Are Essential for US University Applications

English proficiency tests like IELTS and TOEFL are crucial for applicants to US universities. These tests assess a student’s ability to understand and use English in academic settings, ensuring they can cope with university-level coursework. For international students, proving English proficiency is often a necessity, not an option.

US universities require these tests to ensure every student can participate fully in lectures, discussions, and written assignments. Without a strong command of English, even the most talented students might struggle to succeed in an academic environment where communication is key. This is especially important for disciplines that rely heavily on reading and writing, like humanities, social sciences, and business.

Moreover, English proficiency tests demonstrate a student’s readiness to adapt to life in an English-speaking country. Daily interactions, from navigating campus to socializing with peers, require a good grasp of the language. Universities want to support international students, but they also need to know that the students can support themselves in an English-speaking context.

These tests also standardize the evaluation process. Universities receive thousands of applications from around the globe, each with different educational backgrounds. TOEFL and IELTS provide a common measure to assess every applicant’s English skills fairly.

In summary, English proficiency tests are indispensable for US university applications. They assure admissions committees that applicants are prepared both academically and socially for life at an American institution, which enhances the overall educational experience for everyone involved.

The Difference Between IELTS and TOEFL

Understanding the differences between IELTS and TOEFL, and knowing which one aligns better with your skills, can significantly impact your application. US universities typically accept both tests, but some may show a preference based on the test’s structure or their own historical trends. This makes it crucial for students to not only meet but exceed the minimum score requirements to stand out.

In the upcoming sections, we will delve deeper into why English proficiency tests are essential, the specificities of each test, and ultimately help you decide between IELTS and TOEFL to boost your application success.

TOEFL: Structure, Scoring, and Popularity Among US Institutions

When it comes to proving English language proficiency, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is often the go-to for many students applying to US universities. Designed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), the exam assesses your ability to use and understand English at the university level.

TOEFL Structure

The TOEFL is divided into four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. Each section aims to evaluate your skills in different contexts. The Reading section tests your comprehension of academic texts, while the Listening section measures your ability to understand spoken English. The Speaking section requires you to express your ideas clearly, and the Writing section examines your ability to construct well-organized essays.

Scoring

Each section is scored out of 30, making for a total possible score of 120. Most US universities have a minimum score requirement, which can range from 70 to 100, depending on the institution and program. The higher your TOEFL score, the better your chances of gaining admission into a competitive program.

Popularity Among US Institutions

The TOEFL is widely accepted in over 11,000 institutions in more than 150 countries. In the US, it is particularly popular due to its focus on the type of English used in academic settings. Many universities consider the TOEFL to be a reliable indicator of a student’s readiness for university-level coursework.

In summary, if you’re planning to study in the United States, taking the TOEFL can offer you a significant advantage. Its structure is tailored to assess the skills you’ll need in an academic environment, making it a trusted choice for many US institutions.

IELTS: Structure, Scoring, and Global Recognition

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) stands out as a globally recognized English proficiency test. Its structure is designed to evaluate a range of language skills, making it a popular choice for students aiming for higher education or professional registration in English-speaking countries, including the US.

IELTS Structure

The IELTS test comprises four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The Listening and Speaking sections are universal, regardless of the IELTS type you choose. However, the Reading and Writing sections differ slightly between the Academic and General Training versions. The Academic version is tailored for university applicants, featuring texts and tasks more relevant to academic settings.

Scoring

The IELTS test scores each section on a band scale from 1 to 9. The overall score is an average of these four sections. Most US universities typically require an overall band score of 6.0 to 7.5, depending on the institution and program.

Global Recognition

One of the significant advantages of IELTS is its widespread acceptance. It is trusted by thousands of institutions worldwide, including many top-tier US universities. Additionally, IELTS scores are commonly accepted for student visas, which can simplify the application process.

In summary, IELTS is a comprehensive and globally acknowledged test that assesses a broad range of English language skills. Its structure and scoring are designed to give a well-rounded evaluation, making it a preferred option for many international applicants targeting US universities.

TOEFL or IELTS: Which Do US Universities Prefer?

When it comes to choosing between the TOEFL and IELTS for US university applications, many students find themselves at a crossroads. So, which test do US universities prefer? The answer isn’t straightforward—it depends on a variety of factors.

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) has long been the more commonly accepted test among US institutions. It is designed and administered by ETS and focuses on American English, making it particularly aligned with the linguistic expectations of many US colleges and universities. The TOEFL is Internet-based (iBT) and evaluates your listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in an academic context. Many consider it the default choice for applying to schools in the United States.
  • On the other hand, IELTS (International English Language Testing System) has gained substantial recognition over the years and is now accepted by a growing number of US universities. The British Council manages IELTS, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge Assessment English. It offers two types of tests: Academic and General Training, with the Academic version being the one relevant for university applications. The IELTS test features a face-to-face speaking section, which some students find less intimidating than TOEFL’s computer-based format.
  • In terms of preference, many US universities accept both tests and do not have a distinct preference between the two. However, some specific programs or institutions might have a slight inclination towards one over the other, often due to historical ties or regional considerations. It’s crucial to check the admissions requirements of each university you are applying to so you can make an informed decision.
  • Ultimately, the choice between TOEFL and IELTS should be based on where your strengths lie and which test format you are more comfortable with. Either way, performing well on these tests can significantly boost your chances of acceptance.

Tips for Choosing the Right Test to Boost Your Application Success

Selecting between the TOEFL and IELTS can be daunting, but choosing the right test can significantly impact your US university application. Here are some tips to help you make an informed decision:

1. Research University Requirements

Start by checking the specific requirements of the universities you’re applying to. While most US institutions accept both TOEFL and IELTS, some may have a preference. Make sure to visit their admissions websites or contact their admissions offices for details.

2. Consider Test Format and Structure

TOEFL is primarily internet-based and includes reading, listening, speaking, and writing sections focused on academic English. In contrast, IELTS offers both paper-based and computer-delivered options and includes speaking, listening, reading, and writing sections, with a more varied approach, including general training and academic modules. Choose the format you are more comfortable with.

3. Think About Test Availability and Location

Check the availability of test dates and centers for both exams in your region. The convenience of test locations and dates can be a deciding factor.

4. Evaluate Your Strengths

Some students find the speaking section of the IELTS, which includes a face-to-face interview, more manageable compared to the TOEFL’s computer-recorded format. Analyze your strengths and choose the test that aligns with your skills.

5. Practice Tests Matter

Take practice tests for both TOEFL and IELTS. This will help you understand which test feels more intuitive and less stressful.

6. Financial Considerations

Lastly, consider the cost of each test, including any extra fees for sending scores to multiple universities.

Conclusion

Choosing between TOEFL and IELTS doesn’t have to be a gamble. Use these tips to align your choice with your strengths and the requirements of the universities you aspire to join.
