What To Do After Graduation

You have passed out of college. What do you do now? You can start search for a job or go for higher studies. If you decide on the latter, there is not much hassle involved. But the former is opening a new door into a world you have still not tread. It is a decision that has ti be taken with care and deliberate consideration, and with patience and time.

  1. The first thing to consider is what kind of a job interests you. Even in one particular industry there are various options available.
  2. This decision is also dependent on the degree that you possess, and your area of specialization.
  3. Thus the prime thing is to know what is in store for you, study that field, and explore opportunities.
  4. Independent research is essential. Browse through company websites, magazines, other material. Talk to professionals, and experienced people. Also your family and teachers. Take the advice of those already in the industry and those who have recently joined it to know the scope for freshers.
  5. Make the Resume that is impressive, effective, and attractive. Lend a formalized appearance to it. Prepare a Cover Letter as well. Post this on all job sites, and develop contacts.
  6. When you get an offer, consider it. If you are interested, take it forward; if not, then thank the person concerned. This will help make contacts and retain them. You are not bound to join an organization that you do not wish to work for, but acknowledge their interest in you by sending a thank you mail.
  7. Be flexible. You are just out of college and a fresher. This is the time to let yourself be and take a ride around town. You can still hop off at places, explore and then decide what suits you. Do not follow the old man’s advice and be rigid. That will only restrict you.
  8. Also, you will start at the bottom of the ladder. Do not suffocate yourself by thinking of the top of the it. Enjoy the lower planks. Get to know the people around, your colleagues and counterparts, the departments and the industry in totality. You are not bound to commit yourself for ever into anything. But this does not mean you can be frivolous. Avoid wasting valuable years of your life. Make a committed approach to know things and not just wander without purpose. Prepare yourself for the years to come.
  9. Get yourself organized. Make notes and keep them in order. Maintain a diary of important company profiles, with names, numbers, websites and e-mail ids of important people there. Also of the companies you have applied to and got calls from. And of people you have contacted. Keep this information handy. You may not realize the importance of this act, but in future this can prove extremely beneficial.
  10. And lastly, remember that you are out of college. Be mature and professional in your outlook. It is time to get serious.
